Dragon’s Dogma 2: How To Change Your Appearance

March 22, 2024 by Kevin Thielenhaus

Treat yourself to these rare methods for customizing your character all over again.

If you’re like us, you just can’t put down the Dragon’s Dogma 2 character creator. We’re spending hours making our characters and pawns perfect, and thankfully your choices are not set in stone. After jumping into the actual game, there are ways to totally remodel your characters and pawns. But, like everything else in Dragon’s Dogma 2, the method is really weird. If you want to change your Arisen after 20 hours of gameplay, there are a couple ways to do it.

It’s also worth noting that there are some severe limitations to customizing your character from scratch. First of all, you can’t change your species — so think hard before deciding. Customization is also expensive and rare, so you can’t do it too often. While the costs are high, they’re not so high that customization is locked to high level characters. Save your gold and Rift Crystals, and anyone can customize their characters a second or third time.

How To Change Your Appearance

NOTE: Species can NOT be changed, even with the Art of Metamorphisis. Choose wisely!

To change your Arisen (main character’s) appearance after starting the game, travel to the Capital City of Vernworth. There, check the map and find Clovis’s Barberie. Here you can change your appearance in exchange for gold. At the Barber, you can only change your Hairstyle, Makeup or Markings — tattoos or scars. To fully change your appearance, you’ll need a special item called the Art of Metamorphosis.

  • Clovis’s Barberie:
  • Change Hairstyle: 10,000 G
  • Adjust Makeup: 10,000 G
  • Give Markings: 10,000 G
  • Change Multiple: 25,000 G
  • Modify Appearance: Exchange Art of Metamorphosis Item

While 10,000+ G sounds like a lot of money, you’ll typically have 50,000+ by Level 20, and much more in higher levels as you progress. It is a steep cost, but not insurmountable.

Where To Get The Art of Metamorphosis

To change more than just your Arisen’s hair / tattoos, you’ll need to acquire the Art of Metamorphosis item. This item allows you to totally re-customize your character.

  • This includes body type (Masculine / Feminine), hairstyle, body shape, face details, voice, posture, and everything else.
  • The only thing you can’t change is your Species (Human / Beastran).

To buy an Art of Metamorphosis travel to Vernworth and find the Grand Riftstone in the middle of the city — this is the Pawn Guild building. To the left of the Grand Riftstone, you’ll find a vendor that trades in Rift Crystals. The vendor also sells the Art of Metamorphosis.

  • Art of Metamorphosis: Sold by the Vernworth Pawn Guild vendor for 500 RC. This is a one-time-use item. After purchase, visit a Barberie in Vernworth to fully edit your appearance. There are x2 for sale.
  • While we haven’t tested this, you may be able to make a forgery of this item. Find Ibrahim’s Shop in Checkpoint Rest Town to make copies of rare items.

The Art of Metamorphosis can be used to customize your Arisen or your Main Pawn. Deliver to any Barberie to use it and change your face / body completely.

How To Further Customize Your Main Pawn

Pawns can also be dressed up with custom items or altered further — you can choose to change their voice or their personality with Incense.

  • Incense Items: The Vernworth Pawn Guild Vendor sells all of these items. Incense can only be used at campsites in the wilderness. You won’t be able to use these items in a standard inn or in a player home.

Here’s a quick rundown of all the types of incense you can purchase.

  • Ambivalent Rift Incense: For 500 RC, allows you to change the voice and inclination of your Main Pawn.
  • Calm Rift Incense: For 2,000 RC, changes your Main Pawn’s Inclination to Calm.
  • Simple Rift Incense: For 2,000 RC, changes your Main Pawns’ Inclination to Simple.
  • Straightforward Rift Incense: For 2,000 RC, changes your Main Pawn’s Inclination to Straightforward.
  • Kindhearted Rift Incense: For 2,000 RC, changes your Main Pawn’s Inclination to Kindhearted.

The vendor also sells a series of glasses, including monocle, to customize your pawn.

All of these customization options are in addition to the dozens of armor sets, outfits and gear you can find sold by vendors in both nations of Dragon’s Dogma 2. This is all the customization that actually changes your appearance and nothing else — no equipment here. We’ll continue to explore Dragon’s Dogma 2 and report back if there are any more ways to fully change your character. Knowing how strange this game is, it’s completely possible.
