The market for handheld gaming devices is undoubtedly growing. It feels like just about every company is interested in throwing their own device into the ring after the success of the Valve Steam Deck. Today, we’re getting another report that suggests Nvidia is also trying to throw a gaming handheld device into the marketplace. Now, it’s not official yet, but here’s what is being shared online at the moment.
Those interested in a gaming handheld might have already looked at some premium devices. Arguably, the biggest and most popular handheld outside of the Nintendo Switch is the Valve Steam Deck. You’re essentially getting a portable gaming PC, which has proven to be a hit with consumers.
Today, thanks to PCGamesN, we’re finding out that industry insider Moore’s Law Is Dead has taken to YouTube and shared new insights from Nvidia. Speaking with apparent insiders within the company, it looks like we might see an Nvidia portable PC handheld. The sentiment is that Nvidia is missing out on an opportunity to unleash its own GPUs for a handheld device. However, there are some problems in making this a reality.
Nvidia doesn’t manufacture x86 CPUs. That means a partnership is needed to bring their handheld into the limelight. Right now, the different partnerships being potentially brought into the conversation have yet to come out fully. Rumors from what we’re seeing online are that this partnership could even connect Nvidia to Intel. That would make for a pretty powerful team to create a gaming handheld, but again, these are just rumors.
If this does come to fruition, we won’t likely see anything for several years, and the landscape could be quite different. We’ll probably have our hands on the next iteration of the Steam Deck by then, and we’ll certainly have our hands on the Nintendo Switch successor. So, while it’s exciting to see that we might have a heavy-hitting premium gaming device in the pipeline, there’s also likely some heavy competition to contend with if it does make its way out into the marketplace. In the meantime, we’ll just need to wait and see if there’s anything official that happens to point toward a handheld gaming endeavor for the Nvidia team.
