Xbox Cloud Gaming Is Getting An Upgrade This Year

February 19, 2024 by Dennis Patrick

Here’s another way to enjoy your games without the necessary native hardware.

Microsoft has been pushing the idea of making every screen an Xbox. It’s something that might have put some fear in players who enjoyed the Xbox console ecosystem. However, we know that consoles are not going anywhere. Instead, Microsoft has been making it a little easier to play your Xbox games with more freedom. This comes through cloud gaming with the feature currently available through Xbox Game Pass.

However, Microsoft will soon see a launch of cloud gaming for owned Xbox games. Recently, on Reddit, we found out that an individual asked Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox, when players can start cloud gaming their owned games. According to Phil Spencer, this feature should be rolled out to players this year. But there wasn’t much more expanded for this feature at the moment. Instead, we’ll just have to wait and see what might come from the folks at Xbox as we progress through the year.

As mentioned, you can enjoy cloud gaming on the Xbox platform right now through the Xbox Game Pass subscription service. In particular, this feature is behind the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate tier. So you’ll need to upgrade your tier for the service if you’re just on the standard Xbox Game Pass or Xbox Game Pass Core. With this feature activated, you can enjoy a wide range of games on your console, PC, or even your smartphone. You just need to have a stable internet connection to get this feature working correctly.

With that said, we’re uncertain if this rollout to ensure players can enjoy their games through cloud gaming will be tied to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. So, there’s a chance you’ll have to be a subscriber to the more premium tier of the service to even use this feature. But again, we’ll have to wait and see what exactly Xbox ties this feature with for players who want to enjoy their gaming without being tied to a console.

Again, Microsoft recently clarified that they will not be leaving the console business. That might have sparked some fears recently when a slew of rumors flooded the web earlier this month. Rumors suggested Xbox was bringing out their line of exclusives to rival platforms. However, during a recent business update, a few of the executives for Xbox, including Phil Spencer, confirmed that there were only plans to release four games on rival platforms.

None of these four games will be heavy-hitter IPs for Microsoft. Instead, they are either smaller niche games or community-driven titles. We could speculate relatively easily what these games are, but Xbox has yet to make any confirmations as to what is heading to console rivals.
