The Last of Us Season 2 Production Date Revealed

November 14, 2023 by Dennis Patrick

Get ready for the next season.

The Last of Us was a massive hit when it premiered on HBO. Naughty Dog is known for delivering highly detailed and cinematic gameplay experiences. So, it was likely an easy game to adapt into a live-action series. Of course, there were plenty of reservations as we don’t typically see great adaptations from video game releases. With that said, this was a huge change in pace as both fans of the video game franchise alongside newcomers to the IP were tuning in each week.

Fortunately, a second season didn’t take long for HBO to approve. We knew this next season was approved before the first season wrapped airing, and things were looking good. That was until the Hollywood strikes happened, pushing several of our favorite productions back. This second season was halted, leaving some wondering when the next season will start production. Fortunately, some of the notable crew behind the production seemed ready to go as soon as the strikes ended. Now that they have ended, we know exactly when the second season will begin filming. As expected, it won’t be anytime this year.

Because of the strikes, the production was pushed back until next year, 2024. Thanks to Maxblizz, we are learning that this season’s production will start filming on January 7, 2024. This is early into the upcoming year, so we don’t have to wait too much longer into 2024 before the filming can begin. However, because filming is just starting up in January of next year, it might be a season we won’t see play on HBO’s network until sometime in 2025.

With that said, we know that there is another season planned. It was previously noted that the second game, which the next season will be based on, is far too large. Ultimately, it looks like the production will split this next game into two parts. If viewership continues from the first season into this next one, it’s likely that we’ll see the third season get approved before the second season even wraps up. Of course, we’ll have to wait and see if that ends up being the case. Now, for fans of the game franchise, it should be interesting to see if a third game installment is unveiled to help pave the way for additional seasons to be released into the marketplace. But for now, it’s purely a waiting game to see what exactly Naughty Dog might be working on for the PlayStation 5 console.
