CD Projekt Red knows how to hype up a video game. After their success with The Witcher franchise, the studio brought out another open-world RPG. We traded a medieval fantasy setting for a futuristic cyberpunk dystopia. However, while the game looked incredible and left fans begging for its release, the eventual launch of their latest RPG was nothing short of a disaster. There were so many bugs and poor optimization issues that it even prompted Sony to toss the game off their digital storefront. Fortunately, the developers returned to work and aimed to deliver enough patches and content to turn Cyberpunk 2077 around successfully.
That eventually paid off for CD Projekt Red. The development team brought out a game that matched their standards. It’s certainly a differently viewed game today as fans continue to make comparisons between Cyberpunk 2077 today and the state of Starfield. While developers from CD Projekt Red have gone out to defend Starfield and the Bethesda team, it’s at least a nice change of pace for the developers to see how much fans are highlighting the work that went into Cyberpunk 2077. Still, CD Projekt Red’s turnaround process was long and expensive.
Today, thanks to IGN, we’re finding out that CD Projekt Red spent over $125 million to get Cyberpunk 2077 in the state it’s in today. Now, not all of that budget went strictly to bringing the game up to standards for the platforms it’s available on. Instead, there are a few factors that went into the budget. This includes the next-gen console 2.0 update along with the recent expansion release, Phantom Liberty. All of that warranted the amount of money spent on the game, and again, it looks like this paid off, with the reception being more positive today on the gameplay experience.
Unfortunately, if you were just getting into Cyberpunk 2077 and the expansion, Phantom Liberty, there’s nothing else significant coming to the game. This was said to be the last big update for Cyberpunk 2077 since the development studio switched the game engines over to Unreal Engine 5. As a result, they won’t be able to produce any more major content in Night City. With that said, another edition appears to be coming out, which will likely tie together Cyberpunk 2077 along with the Phantom Liberty expansion. Likewise, until that sequel installment releases into the marketplace, we know a new live-action series is in the works that will be set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe.
