Meet DOOM’s Menagerie Of Playable Demons

March 24, 2016 by Ian Miles Cheong

The radio said “No, John. You are the demons.”

The Doom Marine has been, thus far, the only playable character in all of the history of Doom. In the upcoming game, players will finally be able to take on the roles of the demonic hellspawn who gave the Doom Marine purpose. In fact, players will be able to play as these demons in intense multiplayer matches against other demons and marines.

The demons aren’t just a more powerful version of the marine. Many are based on their single-player campaign counterparts and carry a different set of moves. They’re also integrated into each of the gameplay modes, which we wrote about previously, with some modes making demons a key part of the experience.

Here’s what to expect.

Baron of Hell

The Baron of Hell is a brute, who uses his raw strength to brutalize his opponents. The Baron is perfect for berserker players who want to rush right in and dish out melee damage and score Glory Kills. A surrounded Baron can also use his groundpound ability to damage everyone around him.

The Baron’s weak spot is his head or spine, so aim upwards should you find yourself ever facing one.

Revenant

doom revenant
The Revenant uses speed and agility to outmaneuver his foes and overwhelm them with his deadly twin missile launchers. This skeletal monstrosity can fly for short periods of time with his jetpack, allowing him to leap over gaps and hover past hazards. He can even spray missile fire from above.

Revenants are among one of the weaker demons and its jetpack, when fired upon, can be disabled and deal massive damage to its wearer.

Prowler

doom prowler
These creepy looking demons are exclusive to the game’s multiplayer modes and provide options for tactically-minded players to hide in shadows and ambush their foes before retreating. The Prowler can leap to most surfaces usually inaccessible to other characters. He can kill the marine in a single blow and his ability to see enemies through walls provides him with a huge tactical advantage.

However, the Prowler has low health and no ranged attacks, making him vulnerable once spotted by an armed marine.

Mancubus

doom mancubus
This grotesque shambles across the map, wielding a deadly arsenal of rockets. This slow-moving monstrosity is a tank, capable of soaking up massive amounts of damage. The rocket barrage he fires will make short work of any enemy, but it’s really imprecise. He also has a powerful, short-range area-of-effect ability that lets him vent heat built up from firing his rockets.

Players who go up against the Mancubus should keep their distance and pepper him with attacks. His chest cavity is his weak spot.
