Nintendo Looking Forward In Continuing Their Partnership With Illumination

April 7, 2023 by Dennis Patrick

Are more films inbound?

When it comes to Nintendo, they are incredibly protective of their IPs. Being cautious with where they put some of their franchises is rather crucial for the company. In fact we might be seeing an end of Nintendo released mobile phone games. But the future of their IPs might still press on in the film industry. Recently, The Super Marios Bros. Movie landed in theaters, and that has sparked some fans to wonder if we’ll continue to see more projects come to fruition on the big screen.

This latest film comes from a partnership with Illumination, and it seems to be doing well with those that headed to theaters this week to see it. With a big cast of actors such as Chris Pratt, Jack Black, and Seth Rogen, it’s no surprise that fans are curious if more films could be inbound. Perhaps we’re looking into a cinematic universe that will further expand with new thrilling installments along with other Nintendo IPs being featured. So who better to ask about this possibility than the CEO of Illumination, Chris Meladandri, and Nintendo general manager, Shigeru Miyamoto?

Recently, Screenrant spoke with the duo as they continued to market The Super Mario Bros. Movie. However, don’t expect either to reveal what might be in the works. The publication asked directly if other video games could do well as a film adaptation, such as The Legend of Zelda or Starfox. However, Shigeru Miyamoto shut down the question right away by alerting the publication that they have nothing to share at the moment but feel that there will be opportunities in the future.

There’s nothing I can really comment on at the moment. But we started with the fact that we have a shared vision of creation, so I think there’ll be opportunities in the future.

Of course, later on in the interview, Chris Meladandri noted that he was invited to join the board of directors of Nintendo and are working together into the future. That could be a good indicator that more film projects might be already in the works or plans to ensure another film will eventually hit the theaters.

We are so focused right now on this movie, all the way up to Wednesday, and how the audience engages with the film. Nintendo and Illumination have had a really rewarding collaboration. Mr. Miyamoto and his colleagues have invited me to join the board of directors of Nintendo, and we’re working together into the future with me in that capacity. But it’s hard for us to talk about anything else at this time.

At any rate, so far, neither are keen on sharing anything else at the moment when it comes to future Nintendo film projects. It’s likely that news will first come out in the form of a future Nintendo Direct. But for now, the focus is further marketing their latest movie that’s currently in theaters today, along with being available for a home release pre-order.
