Telltale’s Batman Will Use Their Latest Game Engine

March 20, 2016 by Ryan Parreno

Telltale has revealed that Telltale’s Batman will use the latest version of their game engine.

Telltale has revealed in a new postscript to their SXSW presentation that Telltale’s Batman will use the latest version of their game engine.

Called the Telltale Tool, Telltale’s bespoke game engine has been in use since 2004, and received continuous iteration to improve graphics rendering. Telltale does not raise Telltale Tool’s specs as quickly as other companies usually do for their engines. This is because they want to be able to use the engine on as many platforms as possible. However, the Telltale Tool has definitely received incremental upgrades through the years, even as it continues to support 7th generation and 8th generation game consoles, PCs, and mobile devices. For Telltale’s Batman, they promise a very upgraded game engine than previous games, with many features and elements debuting for the first time.

To give you an idea of how Telltale’s engine has improved, here’s a look at the games Telltale Tool has been built upon through the years:

2005 – Texas Hold’ Em
2006 – Bone Out of Boneville
2007 – Sam and Max
2008- Strong Bad
2009 – Wallace and Gromit
2010 – Back to the Future
2012 – The Walking Dead Season 1
2014 – The Wolf Among Us
2015 – Tales from the Borderlands
2016 – The Walking Dead Michonne

Telltale also revealed some more tidbits on what they have planned. You will be playing as Bruce more than in previous Batman games, but in many situations, you can choose to play as either Bruce or Batman. Of course, how you choose to present yourself will change the situation. The game’s comic book-y art style will also be similar to how they approached a recent comics-to-game project, The Wolf Among Us.

Telltale’s Batman is planned for release this summer. It will be released on home consoles, PC, and mobile. You can read the intially revealed details here, and our prior coverage here and here.
