EA Motive Keen To Further Explore Dead Space Franchise

January 31, 2023 by Alexandra Nicholson

A new interview with Dead Space remake development studio EA Motive has given fans of the franchise hope for further adventures in the series. With the remake having only been released a couple of days ago, fans both long-term and new are exploring the horrors of the USG Ishimura all over again to critical and commercial praise. EA Motive has confirmed that it’s interested in potentially expanding the Dead Space franchise further, which will come as exciting news for those who want even more of its particular brand of extraterrestrial action.

As spotted in Gamerant, the Dead Space remake’s Senior Producer Phil Ducharme and Creative Director Roman Campos-Oriola have spoken to GQ Magazine about the title and the potential for future games in the series. When the franchise seemed to effectively be over after Dead Space 3, many fans weren’t expecting the remake of the original game but were delighted when it was revealed to be in the works.

Commenting on the series’ absence from popular culture, Ducharme explains why the studio opted to revive the franchise for today’s audiences. “Back in the mid-2000s, horror was more niche,” Ducharme says, “now you get national releases for horror movies and they make very big box office successes, so I think Dead Space helped push horror in that direction before it disappeared off the map. So for sure, for us. I think the timing is right for us to bring back Dead Space and make it relevant again, for people to experience it in a newer fashion and with a taste that’s a little bit more 2023.”

It doesn’t sound as though the Dead Space remake will be the final outing for the franchise though. When asked about the prospect of future games, or the overall future direction of the IP, EA Motive’s developers are quick to agree that there’s definitely room to continue the adventures in the game’s universe. “It’s a hope that we have,” Ducharme explains, adding that “there’s interest on my side and I think on Roman’s side – you can see his smile – in exploring Dead Space more. There are ideas, that’s for sure. We’re finishing this week, we’re going to be making sure that that launch goes well and that there are as few technical issues as possible. We’re gonna be heading out on vacation and then we’ll sit down and we’ll have those discussions within EA to say, ‘Well, what’s next?'”

With the Dead Space remake riding high in the charts and getting a number of critical plaudits, it’s probably no surprise that the team is eager to continue its journey with the Dead Space franchise. What exactly that will look like though, we’re probably quite a way off from finding out. Still, there’s plenty of time to get stuck into the Dead Space remake while we wait to find out what does come next from EA Motive.
