Whether we want to admit it or not, we constantly seek the “approval” of others in more ways than one. For example, in the video game space, we seek the “approval” of reviewers from various sites, magazines, and other media to know we’re “playing a good game.” There are indeed plenty of games that weren’t the best in terms of review scores and yet were fun titles. But there’s just something about knowing a game is getting positively reviewed that makes you want to play the game yourself. So if you’ve been hesitating about buying Fire Emblem Engage, we have some good news.
The news is that the embargo for the title has lifted, and the reviews have come flooding in. At the time of writing this article, there are 61 reviews for the game on Metacritic. Of those 61, 51 are very positive, with ten being mixed on the result. That has led Fire Emblem Engage to have a score of 82 at present. That’s a positive score, and if you look at some of the reviews for the game, you’ll see why it’s gotten that score or higher.
For example, one review that gave the title a perfect score said they loved how the game focused more on the story, characters, and action than “getting people caught up,” like in past games. Another reviewer praised how the game doesn’t try to overwhelm you with its story or characters as the previous mainline title did. Instead, they said it felt like a “back to basics” attempt and worked beautifully.
Unquestionably the thing that most people praised was the combat. Numerous reviews heaped praise on Intelligent Systems for their brilliance in tactical combat. In addition, they loved how the new Emblem Rings feature changed combat and gave it even more depth.
Many also praised the game’s visuals and indicated that it’s one of the best-looking games on the Switch, which will make many fans happy.
As for criticisms, many cite the story and its characters as not being “as great” as past games. Some stated that they preferred past titles due to their ability to grant major choices to the player throughout the story and thus influence it. Such choices aren’t present here. As for the characters, many cited that they were “unmemorable” and lacked the depth of past game characters.
That being said, the title was adored by many, and when more reviews file in, the Metacritic score may increase. Fire Emblem Engage arrives on January 20th.
