With dozens of Super Mario Maker costumes to unlock, the updates just keep rolling out. This week, Nintendo introduces the Tanooki Statue to the mix, a rarely seen power-up from the Super Mario 3 era.
As part of the Tanooki Suit, the Tanooki Statue would appear upon pressing B in combination with the down button the D-pad on the Nintendo controller, allowing Mario to turn into an invulnerable pillar of stone. Now it can be obtained in Super Mario Maker by playing the Event Course, which will award you with the costume. As the trailer above shows, the costume doesn’t act as an actual suit–statues, after all, do not move. Instead Mario hides behind the statue, using it more as a shield-like cover. Check it out in the footage above.
Other recent costume updates include the Kanto starter Pokémon series Bulbasaur, Charizard, and Squirtle, Chitoge Kirisaki from the popular manga and anime series Nisekoi, and Barbara the Bat from 2004’s Japan-exclusive Nintendo DS launch title Daigasso! Band Brothers (who can also be seen as an assist trophy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl). The recent release of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD also brought in a new costume by way of Wolf Link, which comes bundled with the Wii U game.
There are still many more empty costume slots on the roster yet to be filled so be sure to keep an eye on the Gameranx site tag for Super Mario Maker, where we will keep you informed of all the latest updates.
