Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess Retrospective Video Goes Up On YouTube

February 24, 2016 by Patrick Lindsey

Series director talks art style and fan reaction.

Zelda Twilight Princess
If there’s one thing Nintendo fans love more than The Legend of Zelda, it’s nostalgia. Fortunately, thanks to a move by Nintendo, they can now have both at the same time. The godfather of video games released a video today on its YouTube channel entitled “The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess Episode 1: A Look Back.”

The title indicates that this is but part of a larger series. How many parts the series will comprise, or what release schedule Nintendo may have planned for additional videos, is yet unknown.

Fun fact: Twilight Princess is as old today as Ocarina of Time was when Twilight Princess was released. Wild, eh?

The video features interviews with some significant players in the world of Zelda development, beginning with some thoughts from Eiji Aonuma, the game’s director. The focus of this episode is on original design decisions and the early days of the development process, and reveals just how surprised the team was to see the extent of the positive fan reaction to the revealed art style.

“Directly experiencing the user response at E3 was quite valuable to us,” Yoshiyuku Oyama, who worked on enemy design, stated. “It helped motivated us during the rough times in production later on.”

“We’d tested out various art styles,” Aonuma said, “like with the cartoony style in Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker. But it seemed like users really responded to a more realistic style, so we gave some serious thought to how to bring that sense of reality to life within the world.”
