Resident Evil 6 occupies an odd spot in the Resident Evil franchise. Sitting in between the top-selling game in the series, Resident Evil 5, and the franchise’s soft reboot to survival horror Resident Evil 7. Despite being thought of as one of the weaker entries in the Resident Evil franchise that doesn’t mean the game has no support.
Rustic Games, who previously produced a PlayStation 1 style demake of the original Resident Evil 5 posted to both Twitter and YouTube their gameplay showcase of a fully revamped demo of Resident Evil 6 in the same demake style. The demo acts similarly to Rustic’s previous demake work on Resident Evil 5 adopting gameplay limitations specific to the gameplay of titles that were released originally on the original PlayStation 1.
Taking alot of inspiration from the original PlayStation Resident Evil titles, the PS1 demake has an almost identical layout and UI to Resident Evil 1 and Resident Evil 2. This includes a more classic inventory system, camera position, and combat style.
Having created similar demakes in the past, namely Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 7, Rustic Games’ work is unlikely to go beyond what’s seen in the video showcase. Rustic said that the game is “not a mod” but instead was made using tools like Unity, Blender, and Photoshop.
While certainly not everyone’s favorite Resident Evil title Rustic Games provides a fun insight into the ‘what-if’ scenario for the game if it had come out at an earlier time in Capcom’s history. For those looking to scratch that original Resident Evil itch games such as SIGNALIS are a perfect way to relive the nostalgic PS1 days. The original Resident Evil 6 is available on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC.
