Nier: Automata Head Sad They Didn’t Make It Into Smash Bros

November 7, 2022 by Todd Black

Maybe next time?

Nier: Automata celebrated its 5th year of life in style by bringing the beloved title to the Nintendo Switch. Moreover, the port was praised for its high quality and the ability to mimic what it was like on other consoles in terms of graphics, framerate, and more. While we can’t promise that the title will sell incredibly well on the Switch given how long it’s already been out, we can say that the title will attract those who have never played it before, and they’ll likely be up for playing it on the go with the Switch. However, if you ask the dev team about their biggest disappointment about the Switch port, it’s not what you’d think.

In an interview with NintendoLife, the head of the game, Yoko Taro, was asked about what it was like having the Switch port four years after asking for it to happen on Switch. His reply was:

“I am hugely disappointed that we did not make it in time to get into Smash Bros…”

We can understand his feelings about that. If you don’t understand the reference here, it’s that there is a “rule” for 3rd-party characters to get into the Smash Bros titles. If you look at every 3rd-party character that has been brought into the series, every single one of them has been a part of a title on a Nintendo platform sometime in the past. Even ones like Cloud, Solid Snake, Sora, Joker, Kazuya, and more have been a part of Nintendo platforms in the past, even if it wasn’t via the games they’re most associated with.

Nier: Automata sadly didn’t come to Nintendo systems until this year, and thus, it wouldn’t have “fit” to have characters like 2B or 9S in the latest entry. That being said, not that they have graced Nintendo consoles with their presence, but if there is a new entry in Smash Bros, they are in the running to be in the character roster. Although, we will say that many will hope they don’t rely on the swordplay of 2B. Players love to state there are “too many sword users” in the franchise already.

It should be noted that 2B was in another fighting game via Soul Calibur VI. So if you’re itching to see her in action outside her own game, that is an option.

Jokes from the team aside, they talked a lot about the effort they put into making the Switch port of their game, so if you haven’t checked it out yet, you should.
