Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Not Currently Getting A Second Season

October 18, 2022 by Todd Black

…can we change that though?

Let’s rewind the clock a bit, shall we? When CD Projekt Red first announced Cyberpunk 2077, it was many years ago. At first, the project went through all sorts of troubles, personnel losses, direction issues, etc. Then, when it finally started to feel real, it kept getting delayed. It even lost its release date after unveiling it at E3 with Keanu Reeves due to a delay. But in the end, it did come out. The problem was that it came out as a buggy mess that few people could enjoy. Many wondered if it would become part of the forgotten library of gaming history as a result. Then, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners came out and changed everything.

The anime was made by Studio TRIGGER, a legendary anime company. As a result, the title had connections to the game without having to dive too much into that main plotline. The anime was set in Night City, though, and effortlessly showcased the wonder of a future full of cyborgs, modifications, and shady characters. Despite the series only being ten episodes long, the people were loud about how great it was. Critics praised it from start to finish, and fans loved it so much that they went back to playing the video game that inspired it.

Due to its quality, the obvious question became, “Can we get another season of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners?”

You must listen to CD Projekt Red‘s Japan country manager Satoru Honma to get the answer. They were asked this very question and gave an answer that might not please fans:

“I personally would like to continue to work with Japanese studios to produce more anime in the future, partly because we have received very good feedback. However, just to be clear, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was planned as a standalone work, so there’s no such thing as ‘we are actually working on Season 2 in the background’.

While that will disappoint some, there is a catch here. Honma also noted that IF they were to keep going with an anime project, he didn’t know if it’d be a continuation of the show they have now or “something completely different.”

That is the leeway that fans need to hold on to. Why? Because in a place like Night City, there are a lot of stories people can tell. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners proved that by featuring characters not in the main game and fleshing them out quickly within its ten episodes.

Imagine what they could do with an anthology series set in Night City that shows the place from different perspectives each season. It could be a lot of fun, especially if they bring Studio TRIGGER back to animate it.

Also, CD Projekt Red has announced a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. That means they could want another anime to come out to help bring more attention to the game.
