Easter Eggs in video games are not just prevalent; they’re almost expected in most cases. With many long-standing franchises or series of games, there are plenty of references that result. Whether devs take an item from one game and place it in another or repurpose a specific line of dialogue referencing a past event, story, or joke, these can always pull a major reaction from players. Another way to look at it is with the upcoming Gotham Knights title from WB Montreal. The dev team is creating a world that’s already chock full of lore, so Easter Eggs seem like a given at this point–especially given how long Batman has been around.
The game is set in Gotham City during a period in which Batman is gone and four of his partners in crimefighting are in control. Moreover, Batman himself is the one who sends out the Code Black upon his death, showing that he’s had a plan for a while in case his demise comes. It was up to WB Montreal to ensure that the superhero title would have plenty for fans to enjoy.
Thankfully, the Gotham Knights team was willing to take up that challenge. The Creative Director for the game, Patrick Redding, said in an interview that the Easter Eggs are literally all around you due to how they created their version of Gotham.
“To provide a comprehensive breakdown of that would be almost impossible. What I will say is, it’s no secret that our Gotham City has been crafted in a very intentional way to deliver a lot of environmental storytelling.”
He means that when they created their vision of Gotham City, they did it from the ground up in multiple forms. First, they wrote 400 years of lore for the city and used that to create the five boroughs you’ll travel through in the title. Each borough is impacted by the families that helped run and build Gotham over the years, including big names like the Waynes, the Cobblepots, the Kanes, and others. Additionally, the Court of Owls has been lurking in Gotham for a long time, so they have altered the city to their will to suit their seclusion and maintain their anonymity.
Compile that on top of all the references to Batman villains’ past, and you’ll have an extensive list of Easter Eggs to find.
It’s likely fair to state that some Easter Eggs will be easier to spot than others, and the knowledge you have of the Batman universe will affect how quickly you catch on to some of the more in-depth Easter Eggs. But if nothing else, it’s something to look forward to when Gotham Knights comes out on October 21.
