Destiny: Fourth Expansion and Destiny 2 Confirmed by Activision

February 11, 2016 by Ian Miles Cheong

Bungie and Activision have unveiled new content plans for Destiny.

Activision has just put out a press release confirming that a new expansion will be coming out for Destiny later this year in 2016. The company will also be releasing a full sequel in 2017. Bungie will be developing both titles.

The publisher did not disclose exactly what players can expect to see in the upcoming expansion, nor did they provide any details about the game’s sequel. It does not yet have a name.

Bungie published a blog post on its official website to state that an earlier spring update is being planned for release for Destiny ahead of the game’s 4th expansion. They wrote:

Prior to the holiday break we mentioned a second, larger update slated for Spring. That content release will feature a significant Light increase, a bunch of new gear to earn and equip, and new challenges for PvE players seeking some more fun experiences and replayability.

Beyond that, the team is focused on delivering a large expansion later this year, and a full Destiny sequel in 2017.

The news of the expansion comes in the wake of a report last month by Kotaku that Destiny 2 had been delayed, and that plans for the series were in constant flux.

Players on reddit’s DestinyTheGame community are speculating on what the new content patch might be. Given that they plan to raise the light level cap, the content is undoubtedly going to be very significant, at least compared to previously released event updates. Players may expect to see new missions and possibly even a raid.

The Valentine’s Day event is currently on-going in Destiny and will last through February 16th.
