Overwatch 2 Wants to Have Other Brands Crossover into Title

September 28, 2022 by Todd Black

But who will we see?

Crossovers are a big thing in the video game world right now. Sure, they’ve been around for a long time, but between fighting titles like Multiversus and the nexus of crossovers in Fortnite, people are very curious if other major titles might try and join in on the action, including titles that have shown no indication of being a part of that style in the past. How about Overwatch? The hit title was one to tiptoe outside of its universe on occasion but never fully crossed the line. With Overwatch 2, that notion might be getting an overhaul.

This comes not from a rumor but from the VP of the title! Jon Spector did an interview where he noted that Overwatch 2 could be getting skins from other franchises in the style that Fortnite does.

“We’ve seen some really fun examples out there of games working with other brands or other games.”

Spector praised Fortnite for its use of skins and bringing in characters from other brands of media, including anime, which he is a big fan of. He went on to say that this would be a good fit for his upcoming title.

“If and when we do that, one of our key values is to do it in a way that feels like a great fit for the Overwatch franchise.”

Is this a good idea? It’s all relative to what you like to see in your video games, but the potential is there for not just great collaborations, but continued hype throughout the game’s run. Think of it like this, when Fortnite started to do their collaborations on a grand scale–the anticipation grew as gamers wanted to know who would be next. Even now, after so many collaborations across many popular franchises, fans wonder who will be the next to arrive on the island.

If the Blizzard team can do that for their game? Gamers would be over the moon. Plus, they could do a spin on things. Instead of having full skins of classic characters, they merge the collaboration with their characters to make an outfit reminiscent of the original but tailored to the Overwatch character. Like if they turned Tracer into Naruto via a custom outfit. It might not be their vision right now, but it is possible.

Spector did note that the collaborations could help cut down on ads, and gamers would appreciate that.

That would also help deflect some of the bad press they’ve been getting due to the news about how access to Overwatch 2’s overall features won’t be available to players at launch unless you get one of their premium battle passes. Fans aren’t happy about that, so hearing that collaborations could come might calm them down a little.
