Prey’s Composer Was Hired Because of a Video Game

August 2, 2022 by Sam Arthurs

It’s almost premiere day for Prey! This Friday, August 5, the fifth movie in the Predator franchise will be released straight to Hulu. While it may be the latest movie in the series, it’s actually a prequel that takes place in the 1700s. The Predator will land in The Great Plains and take on a tribe of Comanche warriors. He’ll meet his match in young Naru (Amber Midthunder) though, as she uses her impressive stores of willpower to survive. This is the first Predator movie with a female protagonist, and we’re psyched to see how Naru holds up against the alien trophy hunter.

Dan Trachtenberg, the director, has been very vocal about everything from costume design to original plans for the trailer. Now he is sharing why he decided to hire Prey’s composer, Sarah Schachner. In a Tweet, shared below, Trachtenberg shares that he was playing Assassin’s Creed Valhalla when he noticed the soundtrack for the game. Really enjoying what he heard, he sought out the composer, and the rest is history.

When we were prepping the movie in Calgary I was playing AC Valhalla and was like “well this music is insanely beautiful. Who did this?” The answer is Sarah Schachner. You will be listening to her lots in the future I promise… https://t.co/nrp7Sk7HAS

Schachner is no stranger to composing for video games and movies. Though originally from Philadelphia, she attended Berklee College of Music in Boston before moving to Los Angeles. She works as both a composer and as a string musician, including cello, guitar, violin, and viola, though she plays other instruments as well. The first game she worked on was Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, where she helped with the score arrangements and played some additional guitars and violins. Assassin’s Creed:Unity was the first video game that she co-composed for in 2014, but since then she has worked on several other video games. In 2020, she co-composed for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, which is how she ended up on Trachtenberg’s radar. As far as movies, she has worked on Now You See Me, John Dies at the End, Iron Man 3, and more.

The hype around this movie has been unexpectedly positive considering how much the Predator movies seem to be dwindling in popularity. But Prey seems to have everything going for it: great protagonist, great cast, and a great composer.
