One of the things that The Batman promised when it came out in theaters earlier this year was that it was going to feature a LOT of Batman villains from top to bottom. Sure enough, it had Carmine Falcone, Catwoman, a glimpse of Joker, Riddler, and of course, the Penguin played by Colin Farrell. Many said that Farrell’s Penguin was one of the best parts of the movie due to the dedication to the role and the amount of makeup he was willing to put on.
So much so that he’s getting a spinoff on HBO Max, and that has raised questions on whether he’ll return to the now-confirmed sequel movie.
“Oh my god, you kidding me?!” Farrell asked when the idea of returning for The Batman sequel was presented. “It’s so much fun, are you joking [with] me? I’ve been around the block man. That was an easy sport, I mean … it was a joy.”
He also had big praise for its director:
“Matt’s up to his bollocks, you know, hovering over the keyboard and just planning the story because he’s just so meticulous,” Farrell said of Reeves. “He’s so obsessive about what he does, but he’s all over [HBO Max’s] The Penguin [series] as well. I mean, he’s not gonna direct it but he’s all over the structure of the scripts and who’s gonna direct them. And so, it’s exciting.”
It should be noted that barring something happening in the spinoff series, there’s no reason for the Penguin NOT to be in the movie. When Gotham was flooded, Batman noted that some were going to rise up to try and take control, and they showed Penguin when they did that. Plus, with Falcone gone, they need someone to take control of organized crime. Penguin fits the bill.
