It’s hard not to pay attention to the vast amount of collectibles Bethesda has released this season. At times, it even felt excessive. But did the Fallout 4 writers have some opinions about it that we haven’t heard yet?
In Fallout 4’s comic book store, players can find the below note, which reads:
“Can’t believe I signed on for this. Who wants this crap? ‘Collectors’, the boss says. So who’s the fool here—them or us?”
While it’s probably—probably—not a thinly veiled jab at Bethesda upper management, it echoes a lot of fan sentiment towards the Pip Boy Special Edition, which many people felt was just a gimmick.
Other Fallout 4 collectibles also drew ire from fans. Earlier this week, reviews of Carlsberg’s tie-in beer came back unenthusiastic. Just yesterday, Jones Soda and Target’s collaboration on Nuka Cola Quantum soda also stirred some controversy when it was revealed that the chain retailer did not have a consistent policy in place to cap how many bottles of the limited product customers could purchase (Jones Soda released a statement today saying they would try to make more).
It’s no surprise that so many videogame companies are dedicating efforts to merchandising given their popularity, but maybe this little in-game note is more revealing than it was intended to be.
