Sega Posts 15.6% Sales Increase, Promises 13 New Games

May 13, 2022 by Blue Williams

Sonic fans have a lot to look forward to.

Sega Sammy Holdings published its financial results for the fiscal year ended March 2022, capping off a year of change and growth for the Japanese publisher. The company reported net sales of ¥320.9bn, an increase of 15.6%. Operating income grew 392% to ¥32bn, and ordinary income skyrocketed 1,858% to ¥33.3bn.

This growth is due primarily to the recovery of Sega Sammy’s non-entertainment businesses, which suffered losses during the COVID-19 pandemic. The company is structured into three main divisions: entertainment (including video games, toys, music, amusements, etc.), pachislot and pachinko, and resorts. In 2021, Sega Sammy posted an ordinary income loss of ¥11.3bn in its pachislot and pachinko division; this year, the same division grew ¥10.2bn.

Regarding its entertainment business, the financial report highlights the strong performances of its top three titles — Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis, Hatsune Mike: Colorful Stage!, and Fist of the North Star LEGENDS ReVIVE. Other new entries to the Sega lineup in the past year include Lost Judgment, Shin Megami Tensei V, Sonic Colors: Ultimate, and Super Mario Ball: Banana Mania.

The report also details Sega Sammy’s plans for the coming year. Thirteen new titles are on the docket, compared with seven in the previous year. The upcoming releases include Sonic Frontiers, Sonic Origins, Soul Hackers 2, and Two Point Campus. The company also continues to tease its “Super Game” concept, which is listed in the report with a date of FY2026.

Finally, Sega Sammy brings good news for Sonic the Hedgehog fans. The report confirms plans for the development of a third entry in the Sonic movie franchise, as well as the development of an “original TV series to be distributed in Parmount+.”
