CinemaCon has been full of surprises and reveals, and DC Comics absolutely came to play in terms of having a slew of announcements and showing off footage of their upcoming movies. But key among these moments was that of The Batman. Many had wondered when a sequel was going to be announced, and Toby Emmerich was the one who took the stage at CinemaCon to announce it:
“Matt took one of our most iconic and beloved superheroes and delivered a fresh vision that clearly resonated with audiences and with your incredible support, shattered box office records around the world, which is one of the reasons I’m excited to break the news that Matt, Rob Pattinson and the whole team will be taking audiences back to Gotham with The Batman 2,” Emmerich continued.
“I just want to echo what Toby said and thank you all for your tremendous support for The Batman,” Reeves said. “We could have gotten here without the faith enthusiasm and hard work. Of everyone in this room and your amazing teams here around the world. Every part of this journey has been thrilling for me as a filmmaker and a huge fan of this character and I’m excited to jump back into this world for the next chapter.”
One could argue that this is the “worst kept secret” of recent times given the film’s success, but in truth, given the merger that is going on with WB/Discovery and the questions about what might come next, anything was possible in terms of whether the movie would indeed get another take.
Now, as for what might happen in the sequel, there are plenty of options, and Matt Reeves himself has said that he has plenty of ideas for who might show up in the movie. We’ll just have to wait and see now in regards to how it’ll all look, play out…and how long the movie will be.
