Battlefield 2042 Rumored to be Adding Microtransactions

April 26, 2022 by Carley Garcia

That’s one strategy.

Longtime Battlefield fans haven’t been happy with Battlefield 2042 since it was released in November. Sporting loads of missing features and game modes, the title has also been plagued with bugs, and many players have noted that it barely feels like a Battlefield title at all. How does EA want to lure players back to the dying game? By asking them to spend more money, of course!

Temporyal, a Battlefield 2042 dataminer, recently took to Twitter to post some interesting images and details found in the game’s backend after its recent 4.0 update.

New category images for the #Battlefield2042 ingame store arrived with Patch 4.0:

📦 Bundles
🔫 Soldier, Weapon & Vehicle Cosmetics
⬆️ XP Boosts

Other files include 5 Premium Currency packages and tiers, weekly & bonus missions for the upcoming Battle Pass.

One set of images appears to be category headers for a new in-game store. Battlefield fans are no strangers to microtransactions, but adding them at a time when the game is so incredibly unpopular seems like a poor play.

The apparent store seems to include multiple content bundles, including cosmetics for Specialists, weapons, and vehicles. Players will also be able to purchase XP boosts. Additional images imply a new premium currency, which will be available in packages of 500, 1,000, 2,400, 5,000, and 13,000. It’s unclear how much these will actually cost to purchase quite yet.

The dataminer also noted that files found in Battlefield 2042‘s backend suggest when the game’s delayed Season One would be released. After doing a little match, it seems that Season One may be launching sometime in the middle of June.

Dice may also be gearing up to tweak 2042‘s Specialist system, integrating more class-based systems into the game. This would, in theory, make 2042 feel more like past Battlefield games. No official announcements regarding these finds have appeared, so temper your expectations.

Battlefield 2042 was released on November 19, 2021, on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Earlier this month, the game fell below 1,000 concurrent players on Steam for the first time. While Update 4.0 added tons of fixes upon release last week, it’s hard to believe that much can be done to revive this one.
