Chocobo GP: Lite vs. Full Version

March 14, 2022 by Peter Hunt Szpytek

What’s the difference?

Chocobo GP launched last week as one of the most anticipated kart racers coming to the Switch for quite some time. As a Final Fantasy spinoff that includes playable characters like Cloud, Squall, and a plethora of classic Final Fantasy creatures, it’s no wonder why so many fans have been flocking to the game.

There are currently two versions of Chocobo GP available on the Nintendo Switch eShop which can be a little confusing to some as their descriptions don’t exactly lay out what comes in each version and why one is listed full-price while the other is free. Luckily, the differences between the two are pretty straightforward.

What’s the Difference Between Chocobo GP Lite and the Full Version?

The full-priced version of Chocobo GP offers six different game modes for players to choose from featuring things like a story mode as well as more classic tournament-style races. Chocobo GP Lite, on the other hand, is free, but only lets the player access the prologue of the game’s story and the Chocobo GP game mode.

The Lite version is essentially a trial for the game that does a good job introducing the player to the fun of Chocobo GP but doesn’t really open things up in the same way that the full release does. It’s worth noting that the progress made in the free version of the game carries over if the player decides to take the dive and buy the full release.

Chocobo GP has been heavily criticized by fans for including intrusive microtransactions. Some who’ve only played the free version might expect that sort of thing to be excluded from the full-priced edition of the game, but, unfortunately, that isn’t the case: both Chocobo GP and Chocobo GP Lite are packed with ads for the games’ premium currency and battle pass.
