There are very few “sure things” in life, especially when it comes to the world of entertainment. And for proof of that, look at comic book movies. Yes, you expect them to do well at theaters (and on streaming services), but how well they do (or don’t do) is very much up in the air at any given moment. But when it comes to Batman films…you have to work REALLY hard to screw them up and not get people to come to the theater to watch. And with The Batman, that wasn’t even really an option given all the hype that was built up for it.
Sure enough, after some projection revisions, not only did The Batman win the domestic and global box offices, they did so via a $134 domestic box-office, and over $120 million overseas. That’s the second-best opening of the “pandemic era” of theaters behind only Spider-Man No Way Home (which made a lot more due to it being the “final film” of the line as well as the highly-hyped crossover film). The film itself cost about $200 million to make, so with about $260 million earned in its first weekend? That’s already a huge success.
Of course, now all eyes turn to the question of whether a sequel is going to be made. The answer is looking like a strong “yes” and Matt Reeves himself has already said that he had some ideas for characters he’d love to do in the second film like Mr. Freeze and Hush.
Then, there’s the various spinoffs that have already been greenlit for HBO Max via The Penguin and an Arkham Asylum show. And there may even be more than that believe it or not.
So all in all, this was a very successful movie and there may be more to come.
