Battlefield 2042 can’t seem to find its footing. The game’s first season is delayed and legions of fans are currently holding pitchforks, chanting “Refund, Refund!” Another day has started, and that means that the EA title is under fire yet again–this time by someone who knows his stuff. David Goldfarb, a lead designer and writer on Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3, took to Twitter earlier this week to comment on the current state of the game. He’s not pleased.
Goldfarb had not yet seen 2042‘s gameplay or picked it up for himself, but after watching a video discussing the title’s numerous issues, the former Battlefield designer was shocked.
“I have some questions about that product,” Goldfarb began after watching Stodeh’s video. “Really trying to understand why some of these design calls were made. Why are there no smaller infantry maps? Why was 128 player count a thing that didn’t seemingly have any accommodation for infantry? Why are whole maps shipping without any details art?”
Despite his displeasure with the state of 2042, Goldfarb does defend the dev team in response to a Twitter comment, saying “I wouldn’t fault the devs…no one sits down to make a game without passion.”
The game’s many bugs were also addressed by Goldfarb in the thread. “Was no one in control of quality over there? Who thought this experience honored the BF sandbox experience and took it forward? I’m astonished that there were this many missteps even knowing the obstacles from higher up.
And for all my friends and colleagues over there – ugh.” Read the entire Twitter thread here.
Battlefield 2042 was released on November 19, 2021, on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. In the most recent EA earnings call, the company admitted that 2042 had failed to meet expectations, though they opted not to share specific numbers. A Change.org petition has gone viral this week, with over 70,000 players requesting refunds. The petition’s creator claims that a lawyer is waiting in the wings ready to take the case as a class-action lawsuit, though the validity of this claim cannot be confirmed.
