It’s easy to forget that Counter-Strike has its roots as a mod for the classic Half-Life. Originally created by Minh Le aka Gooseman and Jess Cliffe, the game was originally developed as a multiplayer mod for Valve’s original first-person shooter and later found life as a full-fledged title with multiple releases of the game that saw support from the likes of Turtle Rock Studios (which later went on to make Left 4 Dead) and Valve.
It’s seen many incarnations since its original release as a beta mod in 1999, and its latest incarnation has just been announced by Korean publisher Nexon in collaboration with Valve. The first-person shooter series is about to see its first “real” injection of zombies with the release of Counter-Strike Nexon: Zombies, slated for release during the third quarter of 2014.
As you can expect from the title, the game will be packed full of zombies and will pit players against AI-controlled hordes of the living dead.
“Fast-paced, frenetic action awaits, as a wide variety of new weapons are added to the fray, with diverse game modes available, featuring countless undead. The zombies in the game are quick, aggressive, and dangerous, which makes for a completely new experience. “
In addition to the new zombie experience, players can enjoy the original Counter-Strike experience with modes like Hostage Rescue and Bomb Diffusion.
“It is our pleasure to launch a free-to-play online version of the all-time favourite FPS via Steam. Counter-Strike Nexon: Zombies is a thrilling and easy-to-play game that reaches out to all players. Both players who are new to the game, as well as those that have been logging onto classic FPS games for years will be surprised with the new action it offers” said Kenny Chang, CEO of Nexon Europe.
“Today we are announcing the latest creation from Nexon in the Counter-Strike world, one that builds upon years of success in developing CS Online for Asia,” said Doug Lombardi of Valve. “This title showcases that work in new, zombie, and classic form.”
As previously noted, the Counter-Strike Nexon: Zombies will be available through Steam this fall.
