Destiny Beta Had Over 4.6 Million Players

July 30, 2014 by Stephen Daly

The test was the ‘largest console beta ever for a new video game IP’.

A massive 4,638,937 players took part in the beta for Destiny across all platforms which ended on Sunday, publisher Activision has revealed.

The beta initially opened on PS3 and PS4 on July 17th before being rolled out to the Xbox 360 and Xbox One a day early, on July 22nd. Initially, users required a code which was unlocked with pre-orders for the game but for the last few days anyone on those systems could play.

Activision says the beta was the largest in history for a new IP and the biggest of the current console generation. Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing, commented:

"This is the biggest beta of this console generation by a wide margin and the largest console beta ever for a new video game IP to date.

"Hosting a beta at this scale is an incredible feat, so we're thrilled to see the phenomenal response. But the beta is just a taste of what's to come. We're counting down the days to our launch day, September 9th."

Developer Bungie also thanked fans for their participation in the beta. COO Pete Parsons remarked:

“We were totally blown away by the number of people who played the beta. We surpassed even our own goals and the feedback was invaluable. We cannot thank the community enough, the response was humbling and in the weeks ahead we’ll be working hard to ensure that Destiny lives up to the expectations at launch.”

Destiny is set for release on September 9th for all platforms. Yesterday, Bungie moved to reassure fans concerned by the size of the game.
