Microsoft ‘Committed’ to Xbox After Gates Voices Support for Spin-Off

May 6, 2014 by Stephen Daly

Company spokesperson says Gates was declaring support for new CEO.

Microsoft has responded to comments made by founder Bill Gates yesterday in which he appeared to support a spin-off of the Xbox division.

Communications chief Frank Shaw told Eurogamer that Gates' remarks "were reflective of his support of Satya [Nadella] as CEO.

"As Mr. Gates noted, Microsoft is committed to gaming across multiple platforms with Xbox as the centerpiece of our gaming strategy," Shaw continued. "We remain committed to Xbox and the millions of Xbox fans around the world."

Gates had said he would "absolutely" support Nadella if he were to spin-off Xbox. Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen has previously advocated for the company to sell its gaming division while executive Stephen Elop had said he would spin-off Xbox if he became CEO before Nadella's appointment.

Many of the calls for Microsoft to shaft Xbox stem from the believe that gaming, and services like Bing, distract from the company's key portfolio of products such as Office software and server facilities.

Meanwhile, Phil Spencer, the head of the Xbox division, has said a number of announcements will be made in the coming weeks ahead of E3 next month.

@Steverulez Yea, you'll get a couple of things before. May should be a good month for news. Took me a month to get plans set.

Microsoft will likely reveal details on Sunset Overdrive, the next Gears of War, Halo 5, and more.
