CD Projekt Red Still Not Happy Over Cyberpunk 2077 Melee

August 11, 2020 by Dennis Patrick

Devs have a few months left to tweak before the intended launch date.

Easily one of the most anticipated video game titles to release this year is CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077. The video game title has been teased and talked about for a few years now. Coming from the studio that delivered the stunning The Witcher trilogy, fans are eager to see just how this next IP will hold up and so far it seems that this is quite the ambitious title for the studio. Still, not everything is up to par with the studio’s expectations and right now, there’s just a few months left to really nail the mechanics down before it ships into the market.

Cyberpunk 2077 is set in a futuristic city called Night City. This is a rough area to live in as it seems that the city thrives on greed and big corporations. Players will be taking the role of V, a customized protagonist that takes up as a mercenary of sorts. You’ll have the ability to take on odd jobs to earn your keep. However, the way V go about completing these missions and who V interacts with will ultimately be determined by the player.

With that said, there is plenty of areas for players to customize such as weapons and combat techniques. Players could make use of stealth mechanics, go guns blazing, or take the fight with melee-focused combat. However, the latter is still something that the developers are not 100% confident about just yet. This is one element that we’ve heard in the past with CD Projekt Red having some difficulty in.

“We’re still a couple of months before release, and I’m actually right now working on melee. We’re spending a lot of time trying to perfect that, and we basically, we’re not 100 percent happy, mostly with visual feedback on the hits, on the melee. So, we’re still working on it. We’re continuing to work on it. And I’m happy to say that, even right now, it’s much better than it was. And it’s going to get even better. And we acknowledge that this is something that we need to perfect, basically. But as you said, melee in a first-person game is extremely difficult, from the get-go. So, it wasn’t an easy task, since we basically come from a pedigree of creating TPP games. It was also a big part of our development to actually figure out, how do you do melee from a first-person perspective? We’re working on it.”

It seems that melee is needing some refinements still as VG247 spoke to gameplay designer Pawel Kapala on the matter. According to Kapala, the team is still trying to perfect the gameplay and one element in particular that they are having a tough time nailing down is the visual feedback when an enemy takes a hit.

Recently, CD Projekt Red had another Night City Wire that discussed the life paths and weaponry options players will have access to when the game drops. Speaking of Cyberpunk 2077’s launch, players can mark their calendars for launch on November 19, 2020, for the PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 platforms.
