Polyphony Digital has revealed the 1st new promo car for Gran Turismo 6 for 2014, the Toyota FT-1 Concept coupe.
Just revealed at the International Auto Show in Detroit, MI, at least two news outlets (Forbes and Jalopnik) are heralding the FT-1 as the successor to the Supra, and how. Developed in Toyota’s internal CALTY design studio, it features elements that take inspiration from past Toyota sports cars, like the 2000GT from the James Bond film You Only Live Twice, or their Celica and Supra cars.
The car also boasts of functional sculpting, which marries the elegant design inspired from another era with modern day functional considerations. Essentially, this translates to that insanely pretty car design that’s driving car enthusiasts wild.
As always, Polyphony boasts that Gran Turismo 6 players get 1st dibs on a virtual demo of the FT-1, coming with tomorrow’s free online update. Take the FT-1 challenge at Laguna Seca after the update, and win the bronze or higher to get the car. You can also opt to buy the car outright from the game’s Toyota dealership.
I just want to emphasize that once again, as the past few free cars on GT6’s promotional series, this concept was made into a real car, and shown at actual auto shows. In this case, Toyota was encouraged to make the concept car real after seeing Polyphony’s simulation of it in action.
Whatever you may think of Gran Turismo 6 as a game (especially with the microtransactions), Sony and Polyphony Digital got a plum deal working with car manufacturers to make these dream cars. It’s something Turn 10, Slightly Mad Studios, et al. need to pay attention to in their future racing game promotions.
