Game development is a challenge. It takes a strong team of skilled developers to whip something together that people actually want to play, and now that we’re in a new generation of consoles, the task is even more difficult. Speaking during a developer interview on Capcom's business site, senior manager Masaru Ijuin went into detail about the new obstacles that his team faces when crafting software for the Xbox One and PS4.
"If we create games the same way as before, we won't be able to give our fans what they want, and that's games unlike any they have ever played,” Ijuin said. “We think we should view this new hardware as an opportunity to tackle new challenges.
"Don't get me wrong, we believe MT Framework is a powerful rendering engine. But it's clear that heightened game quality leads to a rise in the number of man hours. The amount of work involved in making games for next-gen consoles is eight to ten times greater than what is required for the current generation of consoles."
The new hardware might closely resemble modern PCs, but the expectations for AAA games these days are greater than ever before. And unfortunately, that makes game developers’ jobs even harder.
