Payday 2 Is Back With New Upcoming DLC

October 28, 2019 by Dennis Patrick

Starbreeze Studios opts to continue development for the previously concluded game.

When it comes to Starbreeze Studios, you may likely be aware of the recent struggles they had to endure. The past year the studio was hit with a big loss after the failure of Overkill’s The Walking Dead. It was so bad that it ended up costing the former head of Starbreeze Studios his job. Now that some time has passed, the company is still kicking though it’s certainly not as spry. In a new blog post from the CEO of Starbreeze, we learned that it was tough work to keep the doors opened for Starbreeze after The Walking Dead release.

Late 2018 Starbreeze found itself in an acute liquidity shortfall (fancy words for: “we were urgently really out of cash”). In December of 2018, Starbreeze entered into “reconstruction”, a procedure similar to the US version of Chapter 11. On December 3rd, we only had projected cash reserves to run the company until mid-January 2019. This was how serious the situation had become. Since then we’ve been able, through extremely hard work and commitment by all of our employees, be able to stay afloat, clean up our business and start thinking about our future and the future of PAYDAY. We’re not entirely there yet, but we are starting to look ahead at what’s next. This brings me to the changes we’re making.

When The Walking Dead launched for the market, it was considered a commercial failure. As a result, the company was close to shutting down but after reworking internally and charting out a game plan, the studio is still with us today. Now to continue on they need to go back and continue development with a title that is already well-received. Payday 3 may be a good ways away, but Overkill Studios, the subsidiary of Starbreeze Studios is bringing out more DLC for Payday 2. Unfortunately for those that were banking on more free DLC, you’ll be disappointed. Instead, going forward the DLC will be paid but you can likely expect some rather expansion updates. Fortunately, it does state that there will be some free updates inbound as well, but we’re not given too many details of what’s ahead.

At the end of the day, those that were hoping to enjoy more heists with friends will be able to do so, it’s just not going to be the next mainline installment to the Payday franchise. Currently, Payday 2 is available for the PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch along with last generation platforms, the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
