CD Projekt Red Gives Players The Ability To Freely Move In Cyberpunk 2077 Cutscenes

October 17, 2019 by Dennis Patrick

Dev talks about the Scene System.

CD Projekt Red is a massive video game development studio that really took off with their release of The Witcher trilogy. Now that their focus is on the next project, Cyberpunk 2077, it looks like the developers are trying to fully immerse the player in every way possible. One of the ways that immersion will be taken place is the cutscenes. We haven’t seen it displayed quite yet, but apparently, players will be able to control their characters even within cutscenes.

Cyberpunk 2077 is an open-world RPG set in the future. Players take on the role of a freelance mercenary who takes on various odd jobs to earn some money. With a city fueled by greed and big corporations, there is always a job readily available to those that don’t mind getting their hands dirty. Outside of the gameplay demos released, the development studio itself is painting quite the ambitious project during interviews. We’re nearly upon its release date and still, new features are being revealed to fans for the upcoming game. The latest is the Scene System, a mechanic that CD Projekt Red’s Krakow offices are taking care of.

In terms of content, maybe it’s about a third of the game [developed by CDPR Krakow]. We’re doing some specific things. For Cyberpunk, for the narrative part, for the cinematic part, there is something new called a Scene System. It’s like our dialogue and cinematic system that occurs within the context of the gameplay of the game. It’s really important because one of the pillars of the development of the project is the idea of full immersion and this new Scene System is all about full immersion. You don’t break into a letterbox formula and see this cutscene taking place, you’re actually in the cutscene and you can control the character or the camera, there are different levels of control depending on the cutscene. It’s fully immersive; it doesn’t take you out of the experience at all. So we’re doing that and also other things too.

GameSpot was present during PAX Australia 2019 where they got the chance to speak with Krakow offices head, John Mamais. During the conversation, Mamais spoke of what areas the Krakow offices are working on with Cyberpunk 2077. There are several areas that they are contributing to the upcoming title, but one that may be a bit unique to fans when Cyberpunk 2077 is the cutscene features.

Typically, players are tasked with just watching a cutscene play before they can progress in the campaign. However, it seems that Cyberpunk 2077 will give players the chance to interact in-game during the cutscenes as well. We don’t know just how much of a big influence this will have in the campaign narrative or how it will work exactly, but we’re sure its something that is bound to be unveiled sooner than later.

Currently, Cyberpunk 2077 is set to launch on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Google Stadia platforms starting on April 16, 2020.
