Kingdom Hearts 3: Sora’s New Keyblade And Amusement Ride Abilities Explained

October 23, 2013 by Ryan Parreno

If you played Dream Drop Distance, you got an early taste of what’s coming to Kingdom Hearts 3.

We have new information on Kingdom Hearts 3, which is undergoing development for Playstation 4 and Xbox One. Courtesy of Famitsu, we have an explanation of the abilities Sora showed off in the D23 trailer, including the entertaining, but curious, amusement park rides.

As Square Enix hinted at before, the 3DS title Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance would give gamers a taste of the action in Kingdom Hearts 3, and so the amusement park rides are actually an evolution of a mechanic from that game called Freeflow Action.  Also known as Flowmotion, it allows them to move quickly across environments, jumping long distances, making unreal parkour actions and kicking butt the whole time. Your playable character is enveloped  by a violet aura in Freeflow Action, and violet light effects surround you and react to the environment as you move around.

So, in Kingdom Hearts 3, Freeflow Action has become more predetermined. When you activate the ride, Sora attacks enemies on autopilot. If you remember the trailer, the action is very exciting to watch and will certainly be a highlight of the game. Square Enix promises this system will feature heavily in Kingdom Hearts 3.

Sora’s other new skillset was demonstrated earlier; the transforming Keyblade, somewhat reminiscent of the weaponry Pit is packing in Kid Icarus Uprising. Again, if we look back to the D23 trailer, Sora’s Keyblade was demonstrated shooting out fireballs, first like a gun, and then one fell swoop in all directions, before actually transforming into a pair of revolving sais.

Square Enix also promises Kingdom Hearts 2.5 will be a more accomplished remake than 1.5 was. Hopefully, the final result lives up to their word. Kingdom Hearts 2.5 is also undergoing development at the moment, and has been confirmed for release on the Playstation 3.
