Despite not having too much control Sega was surprised the fan distaste over Sonic design.

There are plenty of video game film adaptations that are released into the market each year. Despite having immense success as a video game, the IP oftentimes don’t adapt well into a film. With that said, there are still new attempts tried regularly with Sega’s upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog receiving a film adaptation that will hit the big screens soon. When it came to the actual creation of the film, it looks like Sega left a lot of control to Paramount. This news comes from an interview that Games Industry had with Sega Europe COO Gary Dale during this year’s E3 event with the comments recently just being published.

You may have already seen the video trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog which features our favorite blue hedgehog and the evil Doctor Robotnik. After its reveal, the internet fan base for the series took to forums and social media outlets to trash the design Paramount opted for with Sonic. This forced the studio to push the movie back several months to deliver a character design that was truer to the source material.

As a result, it would be interesting to hear what Sega thought of the design and choices made for the film. However, according to Gary Dale, Sega mainly left Paramount control to make the film as they felt the production company would likely make better films than a developer, but again, there are plenty other adaptations in the works that the IP owners are heavily involved with the production.

“Obviously we have a very deep knowledge of the character and the brand. Paramount has a very deep knowledge of how to make movies. The trick is just to bring those two skillsets together to make the best film we can. To be fair, Paramount has been open to listening to feedback from the community around Sonic, which of course has got such a tremendously loyal fanbase with people with very specific views of who Sonic is, how Sonic should behave, how Sonic should look. And I think Paramount has taken a lot of that on board.”

We haven’t seen a new trailer released yet with the character redesign, but we’re certainly interested in seeing how the reception is towards the new edit. In the meantime, we can still watch at the initial trailer footage that was released in the video embedded above.
