We may have been getting barraged with news and updates about Xbox One and the Playstation 4, and sharing a lot of the hype ourselves, but it seems Nintendo plans to outspend them both with the impending launch of the 2DS.
Nintendo’s UK division has told MCV that it plans a big marketing push for the 2DS to children and their parents for the holidays. The company has actually been the biggest TV advertiser in the country for the year, with more ads for Animal Crossing: New Leaf coming out than for any other individual title.
The strategy has paid off for Nintendo so far. The 3DS has outsold all the other consoles consecutively in the last three months, and really, has generally performed well throughout the year.
As Nintendo UK marketing director Shelly Pearce tells MCV, they saw an opportunity on the entry level, and so they have come up with the 2DS. Advertising for Pokemon X and Y is slated to launch, and Nintendo plans to promote it as much as they have Animal Crossing. 2DS will get its own push and feature prominently in Pokemon advertising. We also know now that Nintendo has made it a point not to bundle Pokemon X and Y with any console, even the special edition Pokemon X and Y 3DS XL consoles.
One of the big criticisms of the 2DS is that it may confuse casual consumers with its name and concept. Obviously, this is a point Nintendo did not need to get lectured about at all. Each 2DS sold with Pokemon X and Y is a definite profit, and with a huge advertising campaign in place, Nintendo hopes to assure itself of a huge windfall.
