Pikmin 3 seems to be picking up steam for itself and the Wii U, as Gamestop’s website clearly shows the game is now sold out there, and Pikmin 3 software, as well as Wii U hardware sales, have been picking up since its release.
Expectations were high for Pikmin 3, not only as the latest release in Miyamoto’s most recently conceived IP, but as the first release in the E3 announced 1st party Wii U software lineup. It didn’t happen immediately, but it looks like the game is set to meet those expectations, because the game is not available to order on the Gamestop website, new or used, since yesterday.
As we had previously covered, Pikmin 3’s launch in Japan sold over 90,000 units in its first two days, and also the Wii U console itself to over 20,000 units for that week. As a fan in the Technology Hobbit has tracked down, this was also true of the US, with US sales of the game going over 100,000 units, and Wii U hardware sales also going up to 16,000 units. This was the highest figure since March and represents an increase of over 79 %. European sales of Wii U units also went up to 40,000 units.
As we reported earlier in the week, Pikmin 3 has now sold over 180,000 units in Japan, which represents between 80-100 % of total store stock. Wii U sales there now average 10,000 units every week.

It can’t quite be considered a console savior, but things are definitely looking upward for the beleaguered Wii U. Up next in Nintendo’s schedule is the Wonderful 101.
