If a character is killed in combat, and you don’t rescue them before the in-game time limit expires, you can lose characters forever in Valkyria Chronicles 4. There is permadeath — at least, there is until you reach the end of the game. After completing the main campaign, you’ll unlock the “Cenotaph” option in the HQ. From here, you can revive lost characters — including one very important, very spoiler-y character.
Here’s how the cenotaph works. Once you’ve unlocked it, you can spend DCT to revive lost characters. The more times you’ve lost a character in combat, the more expensive each subsequent revive will be. But, there doesn’t seem to be a limit to the amount of times you can revive people. If you were unable to save your favorite characters and want to bring them back, you can do that. You can even revive characters that died in story-related scenarios or cutscenes. Get all the spoiler-filled details in the full guide below.

[SPOILER WARNING: MAJOR STORY SPOILERS AHEAD!]
After you complete the main campaign, you’ll unlock the “Cenotaph” option in the HQ. From here, you can spend DCT to revive lost characters. Characters only need to revive if they’ve been hit with permadeath — this only occurs if a character is put into a critical state and not rescued.
The Cenotaph can revive permadeath characters multiple times — the DCT price increases for each death. There doesn’t appear to be any limit on the amount of times a character can be killed and revived.
Even plot-important characters can be revived. You can bring back Christel, and even Raz. Saving Raz is slightly more complicated. Here’s how it works.
- To revive Raz, you need to complete the “Beneath the Frost” Hard skirmish.
- This unlocks the “Smells Like Dad” episode. Watch this episode in Chapter 13 to unlock the ability to revive Raz and his companion.
And that’s it! Raz is the only character that has a special requirement to unlock.
