Warframe on Xbox One Depends on Microsoft’s Indie Policy

July 22, 2013 by Stephen Daly

Digital Extremes demands right to self-publish.

Warframe developer Digital Extremes has told Official Xbox Magazine UK that while it's open to releasing its PC and forthcoming PS4 game on Xbox One it will depend on Microsoft's policy regarding the ability of indies to self-publish.

The studio's vice-president of publising Meredith Braun commented, "We would love to see Warframe on Xbox One, the ball is in Microsoft's court with regards to allowing titles on their system that come from an independent developer and not an established publisher."

Last week, Lionhead's Gary Carr said that Microsoft are set to announce a new policy for indies on Xbox One "very soon" and said that Microsoft are "very passionate" about indie gaming.

Lorne Lanning, of Oddworld Inhabitants, recently said Microsoft's Xbox One team were making a mistake and ignoring small developers which would hurt them. Lanning helped launch the original Xbox with Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee.

While Microsoft has ended the practice of charging for game patch fees there has so far been no alteration of their position of self-publishing.

Sony has eliminated virtually all blocks to publishing on PS4 with feedback to devs being entirely optional. However, the quality of PS4 games will impact the level of publicity – if any – Sony affords a title.
