It’s a bit tough ranking down myths so forgive us if you don’t particularly like how its ranked below. But with that said, we would love to hear some myths you particular enjoy that could make its way on the list.
#10 Minecraft Herobine
Creating and exploring worlds within Minecraft is rather endless and it’s easy sinking countless hours into this procedurally generated video game title. Not to mention the game supports online gameplay where players can share their creations with others along with partaking in makeshift game modes such as hide-and-seek.
With such a massive following and endless exploration available within the game, it was only going to be a matter of time before myths and urban legends started to make their way across online forums and YouTube videos.
Herobine is arguably the biggest for Minecraft players where the character resembles the default character skin, however, the character also features white eyes. Rumors and myths have started to float around online stating that the character is the ghost of Minecraft’s creator, Markus Persson’s, dead brother.
This supposed figure would be able to build up or destroy structures within the map along with spawning mobs to attack the player. However, despite Markus Persson stating that he does not have a brother and that the character is not real or even in the source code, this myth continues to live on with the Minecraft community.
#9 Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas Bigfoot
Grand Theft Auto tosses players into an open world where players can freely explore to see just what the entire in-game world has to offer. Each Grand Theft Auto release is controversial though one of the biggest controversial moments the franchise had in its run was with Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
The game released in 2004 where shortly after its release a feature that was previously disabled was discovered. When gamers were able to use a patch created online to unlock the feature known as “Hot Coffee” which allowed players to take part in an intercourse mini-game.
After the discovery, the game was pulled and later released again with the feature completely removed. This has started a new hunt for gamers to see just what else may be hidden away within the game and that’s where the Bigfoot sightings started to come up.
Players started to chime in and post photos online of a supposed Bigfoot creature that roams in the countryside of San Andreas. The myth is that players have a very rare chance of finding the creature and when they do happen to come across it the creature runs away. Others, however, have stated that the San Andreas Bigfoot could actually attack a player if they get too close.
There’s actually some conflicting reports as to if this is simply a myth or not. In past interviews with Rockstar Games members, there have been statements that the Bigfoot creature never existed but something else is in the woods while others have claimed that the creature was included in a beta version of San Andreas that was never released publicly.
#8 Final fantasy 7 Saving Aerith
Final Fantasy VII will continue to be a classic hit and at the time gave a reason for players to try a JRPG for the very first time. Players embark on a grand narrative journey as they attempt to save the planet from a megacorporation draining Lifestream, an energy that gives life to everything on the planet.
Throughout the journey, players are met with a cast of characters to root and despise. However, Aerith’s death was an instant gut punch for most leaving an impactful moment. We won’t go into the full story detail of the game, but during the narrative, players meet Aerith who is a young flower seller that eventually helps the fight against the megacorporation Avalanche.
That is until she is slaughtered by the leading antagonist Sephiroth. There’s been plenty of rumors online since the game released that offers various ways of being able to save Aerith from the attack such as sacrificing Tifa, but these rumors turned out to be nothing more than myths.
As far as myths go, there were also rumors that the developers had intended on offering ways to resurrect the character but in order to meet the launch date set for release, the developers had decided to scrap the idea.
For now, it looks like there is no way to bring Aerith back to live or prevent the attack without altering the game’s code.
#7 Polybius
Polybius is an infamous myth about an old 1980s arcade cabinet. The game Polybius was reported to only been actively available to play for a single month, but during that month the game attracted gamers to play it nonstop.
Only one cabinet was supposedly available where it was stationed in Portland, Oregon. Out of nowhere, the cabinet appeared where it became so addicting the players would be lined up outside the door of the arcade in order to try the game.
Maintenance was also done often by men in black suits. As the rumor goes, this game was developed as a means for the government to test out a new weapon. Through gameplay, players would become addicted but suffer amnesia, insomnia, night terrors, and hallucinations. After the government was done with their tests they took the game where it was never seen again.
The rumor really began to spread after it was publicized in an issue with GamePro magazine, more speculation and myths started to come out. There have even been developers who have come out stating that they have worked on the project but nothing released has yet to be proven.
Other developers have even ridden on the hype surrounding this myth by launching their own games with the Polybius name such as freeware PC games to the latest being a PlayStation 4 VR title that launched on May 9, 2017.
#6 Killswitch
Much like Polybius, Killswitch is a game that’s hard to determine whether or not it actually exists. This was an old PC game which would have been credited as one of the first horror adventure titles. According to the myth, within the game players take on the role of a young woman who has fallen into a mineshaft. With minor injuries, players are tasked with solving puzzles and avoiding hostile enemies as they attempt to reach the exit.
The game was said to be tough and even cryptic at times but it didn’t stop players from eventually beating the game. With that said, the title had apparently deleted itself from the user’s computer upon completion.
Only 50,000 copies were made which means that the few who did get their hands on a copy of the game were unable to keep it after it was completed. Additionally, the game also included another character, an invisible demon. The problem with this character is that it was also invisible to players leaving it impossible to go through the game and as a result, there doesn’t appear to be any information as to what happens to the game when you complete it as the demon.
If the myth is to be believed then there are still copies left out there in the world. But as we move into an area where gamers battle disc rot, these copies that supposedly exist may not even play.
