Ah yes, the Battle Royale genre – possibly one of the most hyped about topics in the gaming community last year, everyone wanted to get their hands on the game that popularized it, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. Unfortunately, it was limited to PC players. Then Fortnite released a Battle Royale take on their zombie survival title which both allowed console players to join in on the fun, and Epic Games released it for free.
Since then almost everyone has been stammering to make some sort of battle royale IP, most notably Bioware and EA’s DICE. But now it seems that Activision is also hopping on the bandwagon.
CEO Bobby Kotick has used a post-earnings investor call today (transcript on Seeking Alpha) to praise competitor Fortnite for “attracting new gamers of all ages and genders”. He also said the following words:
“When we see people innovate in an interesting and impactful way, we are very quick to figure out how to capture inspiration from innovation. When we see things that appeal to our audiences, we are very good at being inspired by those.”
