Developer of 2016 assassination title Hitman IO Interactive has partnered with Hulu and Fox 21 to produce a television series based on the game.
John Wick scriptwriter Derek Kolstad will take the directorial helm, leaving the project management to Hulu’s Jordan Helman, and Bert Salke, Jane Francis, Gloria Fan, and Kira Innes of Fox 21.
Earlier this year, IO Interactive went indie after being axed from Japanese video game publisher Square Enix, which means the former now has a greater degree of control over the Hitman franchise. The latest Hitman release has enjoyed sales of seven million units, a figure which is “rising daily” according to IO Interactive CEO Hakan Abrak.
This isn’t the first time the Hitman franchise has made the leap to the screen. In 2007, director Xavier Gens brought us eponymous dramatic thriller Hitman, which was revived eight years later in the form of reboot Hitman: Agent 47.
Both films accumulated mostly negative reviews on metacritic—but time will tell whether the planned TV series does enough to catalyse a change in public perception. Kolstad and his team hope that Hitman becomes a flagship series.
