Crytek Has No Interest in Pursuing the Darksiders Franchise

February 5, 2013 by Alex Co

Former Vigil Games staff that got bought out by Crytek to become Crytek USA is not working on Darksiders 3…

Last week, it was announced that Crytek would be opening its first U.S.-based studio formed by ex-Vigil Games staff. Now known as Crytek USA, Crytek Cevat Yerli goes into a little bit more detail on why they struck a deal with the former Darksiders studio.

Over on GamesBeat, Yerli admits, "We were surprised when nobody bid on Vigil…We would have liked to have bid, but there were too many unknowns."

He adds, "But when nobody bid [on Vigil], I thought that maybe we could reconsider bidding." So why didn't they? Yerli mentions that they eventually decided against it because the projects Vigil was working on (at the time) weren't a "strategic fit" for them.

Speaking of "current projects," I'd hazard a guess that maybe it included Vigil Games' premiere franchise, Darksiders. While Darksiders 2 fared rather well critically, don't expect the third game in the franchise from Crytek USA anytime soon as Yerli admits that they have no interest in pursuing the Darksiders property rights, so Crytek USA will be starting from scratch.

For obvious reasons, the game Crytek USA is working on has not been revealed, nor has any details been shared. According to Yerli, it will use Crytek's CryEngine development tech (obviously) and that "it is going to be awesome."

Alright, we'll take your word for it, Yerli.

So there you have it, Darksiders fans. Crytek USA won't be making Darksiders 3. If you ever want to see how the game's story continues, best hope someone picks the rights up at some point.

Crytek's upcoming game is Crysis 3 which is being published by EA for a February 19 release on the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.
