Dead Space 3 to Have “Disturbing” Post Launch DLC, Unlockable Game Modes and More Revealed

January 30, 2013 by Alex Co

Dead Space franchise producer Steve Papoutsis teases that they’re working on something "disturbing" for Dead Space 3 as DLC.

Over on the official Dead Space 3 site, franchise producer Steve Papoutsis reveals some of the things he and his team at Visceral has planned now that Dead Space 3 is finished.

Nope, they're not starting work on Dead Space 4 for next-gen right away — at least not publicly. Instead, they're readying a host of post launch content to make sure fans stay hooked in dismembering Necromorphs.

First off, Papoutsis revealed that they have day one DLC suits such as the Marauder, Sharpshooter and Tundra Recon suits, which will have their own respective weapons and custom skins "built for collectors" who like to stand out from the crowd when playing co-op. While this detail wasn't revealed, I gather these special suits will also have their own stats that should help playing the game a tad easier.

Next up, Dead Space 3's now infamous in-game microtransaction thing has finally been talked about. Called "Ration Seals," they play out in the game's lore as  "ancient slips that were used by the crew of the barracks and warships you'll discover to purchase things like food, drinks, and magazines. (Life was tough in the Sovereign Colonies.) Fictionally, crew could exchange Ration Seals for “Resource Packs.” Speaking of Resource Packs, Visceral states that they added this "feature as a convenience for gamers who decide they want a pick-me-up right away," and added "S3 isn’t designed to require Resource Packs, but they’re an option that’s available should you decide to use it – the choice is yours."

Papoutsis also reveals the four game modes Dead Space 3 will have once you finish the game for the first time. We've listed them down below with details on what how each mode differs.

New Game +

Lets you start a new game with all your upgrades and arsenal intact.

Classic Mode

Which is for the DS1 veterans out there. It’s single-player only, uses “classic” aiming, and there’s no crafting – all weapons have to be built from blueprints, a la the original game.

Pure Survival Mode

If you like survival horror and resource management, this is the mode for you. Enemies ONLY drop resources, and there’s no ammo, health, or weapon parts to be found. You’ll have to choose what to craft every time you see a bench. Upgrade? Med Pack? Plasma Core?

Hardcore Mode

Choose this mode, and you only get one life to live for the entire campaign.

Finally, Papoutsis ends by revealing that they're working on a "top secret additional story that will be coming in a few weeks." He's not saying much, but says that fans should think "disturbing" to get their imaginations going.

Dead Space 3 is set for release next wek (February 5) for the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.
