Pong Celebrates Its 40th Anniversary On iOS

In the form of a winner, from an indie developer’s challenge.

Pong is, without question, one of the most important and influential video games of all time. By many people's accounts, and viewed within certain criteria, it's the very first video game of all time. One that also turns 40 years old this year. So what better way to celebrate than a version for iOS devices?

There are countless Pong clones in the App Store already, but Pong World represents the first time it has officially made an appearance, which is remarkable on a number of levels. It's assumed that Atari wanted to make its debut extra special, and to a large part, it is:

Earlier this year, Atari offered a challenge for all the indie developers out there. The goal was to re-invent the core game for today's audience, and the first place cash prize was $50,000, plus revenue sharing for three years.

The winning attempt is the creation of zGames. Here's their prototype pitch that got them the top slot:
