GameStop: Wii U Game Pre-Orders Reach 1.2 Million, Twice the Attach Rate Compared to the Wii

November 15, 2012 by Alex Co

GameStop notes that software sales for the Wii U have now reached 1.2 million and compared to the original Wii, it’s software attach rates are doubled!

In GameStop's earnings call, the retailer has revealed that they have 500,000 Wii U consoles allocated for consumers, but all of which have alread been reserved by pre-order buyers. In addition to that, the total tally of Wii U game pre-orders have reached a healthy 1.2 million units, and according to GameStop, that accounts to an attach rate of 2.4 — more than double what the retailer saw for the original Wii's launch.

So. what games are selling already? The retailer notes that aside from ports of existing best-sellers like Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 and Assassin's Creed 3, tailor-made games for the console like ZombiU, Scribblenauts Unlimited and New Super Mario Bros. U are also faring very well. While no specifi breakdown of each title has been shared, this still bodes well for Nintendo and it's courting of the "core" demographic.

For those wondering why attach rates are important, this is a key indicator for publishers to know whether it's worth their time and money to invest long-term at a platform. Hopefully, this attach rate for the Wii U will continue so that it won't experience a software drought like the original Wii had.

Have you pre-ordered your Wii U yet? If so, what games have you pre-order along with it?

Thanks, GamesIndustry
