Hawken to Launch with Oculus Rift Support

August 28, 2012 by Lana Polansky

Mech shooter will come equipped with VR headset support.

The VR device that made waves on Kickstarter, the Oculus Rift, has now added the upcoming mech shooter Hawken to its roster, alongside Doom 3 BFG.

The game, a free-to-play online game coming on December 12, is a natural fit for the Oculus Rift. Meteor Entertainment CEO Mark Long explains,

“Hawken is perfect for Oculus because its environments are well-suited for the level of visual density and distances you're looking it. The shapes that are close and far away lend themselves well to 3D."

Long adds, "When you're in a typical first-person shooter, you're a slave to the direction your weapon is pointing, which is unnatural. Being in a Mech, this offers a more realistic virtual reality experience."

Hawken is getting a special VR cockpit that will let players wearing the device to look around inside their mechs. Long also says that the 3D audio with head tracking will be a part of the final product, which he says is an important component to an authentic-feeling VR experience. Long continues,

"We want to integrate Hawken into Oculus with a special version of the game engine through the HMD through post-processing of the point-of-view. With Unreal we can dynamically change the point-of-view and make sure that the latency is as low as possible for the viewers to eliminate motion sickness."

Conveniently, the Oculus Rift is set to hit stores sometime in December as well as Hawken, though the device hasn’t yet gotten a concrete date.
