Sonic and SEGA All-Stars Transformed Dev: The Wii U (Version) Looks as Good as Any of the HD Platforms

August 24, 2012 by Alex Co

Sonic and SEGA All-Stars developer Sumo states that the Wii U’s tech specs are "surprising."

While Nintendo's still twiddling its thumbs before they announce the release date and price of its upcoming next-gen console the Wii U, comments that the console are on-par with the PS3 and Xbox 360 have been running rampant. Of course, hearing that a supposed next-gen console is just equal to what we have now isn't exactly comfroting for Nintendo fans, no?

Well, now it seems Sonic and SEGA All-Stars Racing Transformed developer Sumo thinks the same way — in part, at least.

In an interview with the Official Nintendo Magazine, executive producer Steve Lycett spoke of the hurdles his team had to face when developing the game on the Wii U.

There are always surprises and unexpected challenges when you develop on a new console," said Lycett. "When we first got our hands on the kit, the first surprise was the capability of the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit). We'd been worried that we might need to re-engineer all the effects and shaders in the game, but they worked just fine.

The Wii U looks as good as any of the HD platforms. The Wii U has way more memory, so we can take advantage of that with less compression on elements and textures, so it will look all lovely and shiny.
Of course, it's also comforting to hear that the Wii U needs less compression due to it having more RAM than the PS3 and Xbox 360, no?  Are you fine with the Wii U looking on-par with current-gen consoles or are the developers just not familiar with the hardware yet to make every game look as good as they can?
